Summary

After ten interesting years in the Admission Office at Brown University, I recently made the transcontinental move to rejoin my husband who has been working in Palo Alto, CA, as a history professor. I had lived here before, when I first came to the US in 1987. At that point I had completed a BA (Hons.) in History, as well as a MA degree in African History at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg. In my first decade in the US, I earned another MA in Library and Information Science, spent time at home with three kids, coordinated a soup kitchen, and did freelance work as a proofreader and editor. I also returned to southern Africa for two years, where I worked for a small consulting firm that did community-based economic development around conservation land and land reform initiatives. On returning to the US, we settled in Rhode Island where I served the next ten years as an Associate Director of Admission at Brown University.

At Brown I evaluated applicants from students across the country and the world – Africa and Europe in particular – served as a freshman and sophomore advisor, and took on the role of travel coordinator for the office. I also coordinated a program for older students resuming their educations, worked on the Admission Office’s publications, and directed an initiative to increase the presence of lower-income students on campus.

When I left Brown, I knew that I wanted to stay involved in the field of international education, and that I wanted to continue working with teenagers. The recession seems to have contracted opportunities in the former for the moment, but meanwhile I have launched a new career as an independent consultant. I work with College Goals, a group founded by a former dean at Brown, and our clients are drawn from across the world – we do a lot of work through email, Skype and such – as well as the US.
