Our lives consist of both the little and meaningful moments. Some of these memories may pain us, while the others bring immense joy. A breeze of sunny autumn air cavorts in my hair as I pedal furiously down the passionately sunlit road, crashing through piles of scintillating maple and oak leaves decorated in fervid streaks of red and yellow. Lines of orange-leaved trees tower over me like an opalescent picket fence. The pleasant aroma of warm pumpkin pie runs up and performs a cheerful dance, then bows and travels to the next passerby. Every year, Macy’s hosts its annual Thanksgiving Day Parade in Manhattan which attracts more than 3.5 million people to the streets of New York City each year, as well 50 million TV viewers nationwide. The parade lasts three hours long and completes a 2.6 mile course. It is said to be the most widely holiday parade celebrated in the United States. People often take things for granted, which is completely natural. It is normal, as human beings, that we don’t notice something’s worth until that thing is lost. That is the reason I believe that there should be a time for people to appreciate everything they value at the moment, before those things are lost and gone. The things that can obtain value to someone can be anyone or anything, such as a family member, or even an item, like a piece of jewelry passed down from earlier generations. The worth of people, objects and thoughts in someone’s life is just one of those thoughts that he or she doesn’t necessarily think about everyday no matter how relevant those things really are. That is why I insist that a day or two are needed for people to stop and make a list in our minds about things we are grateful for and to give credit to people or things that deserve it. It’s a Tuesday morning, around 5:45 am, and I am standing at the edge of the pool. The sun hasn’t risen yet, and it’s dark. The pool is empty. I guess I could sleep in for an extra two or three hours, or head over to the pool, the bitterly cold, yet welcoming pool, where practice starts before I am mentally awake. It should’ve been obvious – “sleeping in” seems like a luxury as compared to my daily summer routine: wake up at 5:30 every day to be in the pool by 6. Why should I be punishing myself like this? At the sound of the bell, I eagerly run out of the door to begin my daily sprint for front spot in the brunch line.
