When I sit by the window and stare out into the trees, I am always delighted by their changing colors. I see the lush, green leaves turn into golden perfection to orange and red, then I know autumn is coming. For me, it used to mean nothing special; at best, it was a reminder of wearing more clothes because of the coming freezing temperature in northeastern China. However, after I came to the U.S., I look forward to these golden falling leaves, to the arrival of fall because it reminds me of the Thanksgiving festival. When the day comes, the various colors of food, the vibrant buzz of the house, and the words from my aunt, uncle and cousins make me feel warm and not lonely, even if I live far away from my parents. It leaves me hoping the day will never end. It is just amazing.

However, we do know that people need to make great, time-spending efforts to let amazing things happen; thanksgiving is one of the cases. I have experienced two Thanksgiving days since I lived here, and I saw how much work one family, at least mine, need to do to let this time become a perfect memory for everyone. My aunt, the one who works the most during these days, starts to clean the house and buy needed supplies several days before the Thanksgiving night; my uncle always decorates the house and cooks the meal with my aunt even if this is almost the only time in a year for him to relax. Since they are busy, my cousin and I need to take the responsibility of taking care of my four-year-old cousin. Later, the guesses arrive, and we have fun together until midnight. It is actually very stressful. However, no one complains even if all of us have a lot of work to do. Instead, we are thankful for other people’s work, and it is this appreciation that let me look forward to next year’s Thanksgiving. This is the lesson I learn from this day, that appreciation can create happiness in people’s hearts. So why do we have to save the words of appreciation to every year’s Thursday of November, if the simple action can bring such happiness to people? Why can’t we say “Thank you” to our loving ones just because it somehow feels embarrassing? For me, Thanksgiving day is not the only day for us to present our love; it is more like a reminder that helps people remember the importance of showing appreciation, because sometimes we just forget.

We just forget. It seems unbelievable, but it is the truth. People tend to take things from close ones for granted. For me, living far away from parents, I am so thankful for my aunt and uncle that they are taking care of me in every aspect of my life, and thankful for my teachers and classmates who help me improve my English, while feeling regret that I did not notice what my parents did the same for me in the past. I should not leave such a regret to myself; nobody should.

So don’t forget to say “Thank you” before it is too late! The amazing time we experience in Thanksgiving Day should become a driving force, that encourage us to show our appreciations to other people, other things bravely in every single day of our lives. It is the source of happiness.
