AP Biology / USA Biology Olympiad (USABO) training class

AP Biology / USA Biology Olympiad (USABO)

For two years, SpringLight has been offering an AP bio/USABO training class for students from 9th to 11th grade. Every year, we have 9th graders who qualify for the USABO semifinals and get scores of 4 or 5 on their AP biology exam.

Time: 9/5 to 12/19 (11/28 No class ), Saturdays, 6:30 to 9:30pm, $1350 (15 sessions)

(We can offer online class by need.)

Some biology background recommended
Goal: improve GPA and AP score, reach USABO Open exam

Course description:

The class has two primary goals:

First, to prepare students for the AP Biology exam by

(1) covering every necessary chapter in the Campbell Biology 9th edition text,

(2) completing worksheets, practice problems and exams, and

(3) reviewing historically paradigm shifting experiments.

Second, to support students in their preparation for the USABO competition by

(1) covering every single chapter in Campbell Biology 9th edition text,

(2) completing a variety of practice problems, and

(3) reading and discussing a variety of supplementary materials.

As the class is three hours long, the first two hours will cover primary AP Biology materials.  The last hour will cover supplementary material intended to aid students who are preparing for the USABO.

This class is ideal for students who are studying independently for the AP Bio exam or for any student interested in biology.

Biology SAT II Class will start from August 16

Time: 8/16 – 11/1, Sundays, 1:30 to 3:30pm, $600(12 sessions)

Address: 1340 S De Anza Blvd. Suite 204, San Jose, CA 95129

Registration: https://goo.gl/Tl7KHc

The instructor Eddie Zhang’s students have seen score increases of 200 points within 4 weeks. They have all scored between 730 to 800.

Class Structure:
Every student takes a diagnostic test before the first class to identify areas in which they need most focus. Outside of class, we will give students a weekly practice test in addition to questions specific to the week’s topic. Class lectures will cover every subject but address some more than others according to student needs. For the final three weeks, students will take at least two practice tests each week and class will be tailored to answering individual question and reviewing problem areas.

—————————————————————–

About SAT Biology II:
The SAT Biology subject test is a 60 minute exam with 80 questions.
It measures your understanding of the major concepts of Biology and your ability to use these principles to solve specific problems.
Although taking the SAT Biology Subject Test is not a compulsory criteria in the admission requirements of some universities, taking it can help you demonstrate your interests and showcase your strengths in the subject.

Notes:
*The SAT Biology subject test is offered in Oct, Nov, Dec, Jan, May and June
*Calculator use is not permitted .
*Problem solving may requires simple numerical calculations (you need to know Algebra, trigonometry, etc) .
*Measurements are expressed according to the metric system.
*Experience in the laboratory is recommended.
*Take Biology E(Ecological) if you are comfortable answering questions about biological communities, populations and energy flow.
*Take Biology M(Molecular) if are comfortable answering questions about biochemistry, cellular structure and processes, such as respiration and photosynthesis.
*Fill the appropriate section on your answer sheet for the test you have chosen and make sure you indicate whether it’s Biology E or Biology M.
*You cannot take both tests on the same test date, but you can take them on two different test dates.
*The SAT Biology subject test reflects what is normally taught in high school. However, due to differences in high school classes, some students will find questions on topics they’re not familiar with. This is nothing to worry about. You do not have to get every question correct to receive a perfect score (800) for the test. Many students do well despite not having studied every topic covered.

Python Project (games or App)Training Camp

游戏game,或者web app or mobile App?

Already know Python? Do you want to try to do a project to show off your skills? Have an idea for a Python app but don’t know how to start? Take a guided course on how to do a coding project!

Students will be guided through a short initial project before planning their own. This course will cover how to use GitHub for source control, how to plan a project, how to start, plan data structures, regularly test code, understand APIs, research solutions to problems, etc.
Students must have experience in Python before, and have experience in debugging and fixing code. Experience in Object Oriented Programming for Python, and exception handling, are a plus. Students will be required to spend time outside of class every day working on their projects. Course will be taught in Python 2.7.x, but students may use Python 3.x if they wish.

Java Programming class from 7/20 to 8/7

Learn Java Programming at SpringLight:

SpringLight is one of the earliest and most experienced schools of its kind that has been teaching Java to middle and high school students since 2012 in the Bay Area. SpringLight’s instructors are all talented high school or college students who serve as role models to the students. Young instructors connect better with students, and have successfully completed high school classes in Java, which allows them to understand exactly what their students need to learn. These factors are the keys to success in teaching.

After taking SpringLight’s 3-week Java course, students will be well-prepared to take the AP Computer Science course at their respective high schools. Students who take SpringLight’s Java courses will learn valuable programming skills and concepts. Past students have also shared that they greatly enjoyed these courses in addition to how much they’ve learned.

Java programming
