The American Mathematics Competitions (AMC) consist of a series of increasingly difficult tests for gr 6-12. Students who have passed AMC 10 or AMC 12 are invited to take AIME. An AIME qualifier is more impressive than an 800 on a SAT Math. There were some advanced students began to take AMC once or twice each year since their 7th grade. They got big improvement each year & successfully became an AIME qualifier within 2 to 5 years. Good AMC scores will enhance admission opportunities for students to elite colleges. Its mission is to help students increase interest in math and to develop critical thinking & problem-solving skills in Math.

Solving Problems Video

In today’s technology-oriented society, those among today’s generation of youth who will succeed will not be the ones who can retain the most information, but the ones who can do what computers cannot — solve problems they have never seen before. Learning how to do this requires practice, and there is no better way to get this practice than by solving challenging math problems.

Today’s American education system fails to understand that this is the whole point of teaching math, so it does not engage and challenge students enough at all. How, then, can students develop a strong problem solving background? Nelson Niu explores the answer to this question from a fresh perspective.

AMC 8 preparation Class

The AMC 8 contest is for students in the sixth through eighth grade, although accelerated fourth and fifth graders can also take part.

AMC 8 is 25 questions in length, and is multiple-choice with no penalty for guessing. The contest takes 40 minutes. A student’s score is the number of problems correctly solved.

Why participate in AMC-8 (quoted from AMC-8 website)

A special purpose of the AMC 8 is to demonstrate the broad range of topics available for the junior high school mathematics curriculum.

Additional purposes of the AMC 8 are to promote excitement, enthusiasm and positive attitudes towards mathematics and to stimulate interest in continuing the study of mathematics beyond the minimum required for high school graduation. Developmentally, junior high school students are at a point where attitudes toward school and learning, and perceptions of themselves as learners of mathematics are solidified. It is important that they be provided opportunities that foster the development of positive attitudes towards mathematics and positive perceptions of themselves as learners of mathematics. The AMC 8 provides one such opportunity.

The American Mathematics Competitions (AMC) is the oldest and most prestigious nationwide mathematics competition in the United States. It started in 1950 and it is and has been the exclusive pathway for a student to advance to the USA Mathematical Olympiad.

Activities like the American Mathematics competitions organized by the Mathematical Association of America allow and encourage students to excel in an academic sphere. The contest is a rewarding experience where mathematical curiosity and skill are stimulated.  AMC is designed to inspire an interest in mathematics that will lead to academic success, scholarship and a rewarding career.

Many well-known colleges and universities request scores from AMC contests at the higher grade levels and use them for recruiting and admissions.

ACT English/Grammar Workshop

ForbesBusinessinsider,etc。

ACT English/Grammar Workshop

ACT has four parts. The first part is English. 75 questions 45 min.

To help students ace the ACT English section, SpringLight is hosting a two hour ACT grammar workshop.

The quickest way to increase scores on the ACT English section is to thoroughly review certain grammar rules.

At our 2-hour workshop, students will review all relevant rules and complete a variety of practice problems.

Competition Math Summer Camp 8/3 to 8/14

Math Competitions

The importance of math cannot be emphasized enough — it is vital to students applying to a wide range of majors, not just STEM. It helps you think on your feet, teaching you to find innovative solutions to complex problems and building confidence along the way.

Math competitions are much more than a contest — they develop a student beyond the normal course of school math. Training for competitions will improve logical and critical thinking, and increase independent problem solving skills, valuable abilities that will benefit students for life.

 Counting and Probability

Having a high-level understanding of counting and probability is absolutely critical to doing well in math — from middle and high school competitions like Mathcounts and AMC, to high school classes themselves like Algebra 2/Trigonometry and Pre-Calculus. Students will learn about topics ranging from the number of digits used to number the pages in a 100-page book, to the probability of rolling doubles on two dice. As a result of taking this class, students will have mastered and be able to confidently solve these now-familiar commonly found counting and probability problems on these competitions.

Number Theory

Number theory, a topic ranging from divisibility rules to prime numbers, is a topic rarely covered in high school classes, yet one that appears often on Mathcounts and AMC problems and proves to be a crucial skill for students who take part in math competitions. Mastering number theory is a valuable aid in helping students understand more abstract math concepts in high school and college, in calculus and beyond. This course will also touch on several proof methods, such as proof by contradiction and induction, that are absolutely essential for proof-level math competitions such asBAMO or USA(J)MO.

Instructor: Victor Chen

These classes will be taught by Mathcounts alumni and Miller Middle School Mathcounts coach VICTOR CHEN, who placed 7th in California Mathcounts in 8th grade and led Miller to 3 consecutive victories at the chapter level, as well as placing 2nd place as a team in California this past year. He has also had years of outstanding experience in other math competitions, being 1 of only 250 in the United States to qualify for the 2015 USAMO. He is a 4-time AIME qualifier, in 2015 placing 2nd nationally in the AMC 12A. He was the SFBA A1 captain for ARML, leading the team to place 1st nationally, and has placed 3rd and 5th in the 2014 and 2015 CAMLcompetitions, respectively.

他的Mathcounts的学生给他的review:“I liked my teacher, Victor Chen, very much. I learned a lot of material, including counting, venn diagrams, and factorials, throughout the duration this week. He explained each problem very thoroughly and patiently answered any questions I had.”

“I took a Mathcounts class. Before the class, I was moderate at probability, which isn’t good enough for contests. After the class, I became proficient. The teacher was pretty nice.”

UC grants credit for College Board Advanced Placement examinations on which a student scores 3 or higher.

Elective units awarded may be applied to UC graduation requirements for specific subjects and/or for general education/breadth requirements, as determined by each campus.

For transfer students, AP exams can also be used to meet the minimum transfer admission subject requirements in English (UC-E), Math (UC-M) and 4 other courses chosen from the humanities (UC- H), behavioral/social sciences (UC-B) and biological/physical sciences (UC-S).

Although the College Board reports all AP tests results to us, students should be aware AP test scores lower than 3 will not adversely affect their chances for admission.

Units granted for AP tests are not counted toward the maximum number of credits required for formal declaration of a major or the maximum number of units a student may accumulate prior to graduation. Students who enter UC with AP credit do not have to declare a major earlier than other students, nor are they required to graduate earlier.

Credit granted for AP exams

(Credit is expressed in quarter units. For Berkeley and Merced, divide total quarter units by 1.5 to convert to semester units.)
