Coaching Responsibilities:
· Lead novice and varsity members in practice. Monitor student progress; hold practice rounds between teammates and constantly drill students in fundamentals.
· Review cases and arguments made by students; advice on the parts that could be made better. Novices submitted a plethora (40+) of cases up to 1,500 words for me to check.
Accomplishments:
- Improved Rigor – Plan out every practice, giving lectures on some days and drilling on others; take attendance. If a student were absent from a large number of practices, I would decline his participation in an upcoming tournament. This system has provided much needed discipline and rigor to the team.
- Personal Guidance – Spend large amounts of time discussing not only relevant debate material with students but also build strong relationships among members. Try to include everyone in every discussion every time to foster communication among teammates.
· Positive Outcomes – Lynbrook now possesses one of the strongest forensics teams in the state of California, as seen from the following statistics:
· Won 5th place, Lincoln Douglas Debate, California State Tournament, 11
· Won 1st place, Parliamentary Debate, California State Tournament, 11
· Qualified two Lincoln Douglas debaters to the prestigious Tournament of Champions in 2009 as opposed to zero qualified in 2008
· The novice Lincoln Douglas division reached the final round of the Novice National Championships, the Finals of the Palo Alto Round Robin, undefeated at the Lynbrook Novite, the Novice Debate at Saratoga High School, and reached elimination rounds at the California Invitational, Stanford Invitational, and the Santa Clara University Dempsey-Cronin Invitational
Research Skills
My heightened awareness of social issues was founded through my participation in debate. College leveled scholarly research is now a familiar task to me. The many hours in the library crawling through gigabytes of data have honed my quick-reading and critical thinking skills.
