在1989年的法网大赛上捧起了冠军奖杯，成为美国男子网坛34年来第一个夺得法网冠军的选手，并创造了最年轻大满贯赛冠军的年龄纪录。在16年的职业生涯中，张德培取得了662胜312负的骄人战绩，总共58次闯入过各项赛事的决赛，并且赢得了其中的34座单打冠军奖杯，其中还曾三次闯入大满贯赛的单打决赛。世界排名曾位居第二。2008年，入选世界网球名人堂。
