Parent Appreciation Essay

My parents. They do so much for me. They provide food, a home, and care for my brother and me. But I take all of this for granted and in return, give them trouble and anxiety. First generation parents, such as my parents suffer even more. My father had to face the tough challenge of learning the American culture, finding jobs, and keeping his traditions alive in their children.

First off, my dad underwent the hardship of learning about America’s technology and advancements. Coming from an extremely poor family, my father was not used to America’s new ways. My dad had to learn about everything in America’s culture so he could adapt to it and teach his children about it. He went through this challenge, fueled by wanting to give his kids a good education.

In addition, when my father flew away from his homeland, he faced the trouble of finding a new job. Jobs were already in very high demand, and when thousands of people came to the United States, jobs became even more difficult to find. Many Americans who already had jobs didn’t want immigrants to become their underling or coworker because it would be very hard to communicate. As shown, my dad had a hard time finding a good job, but he worked hard for his children.

Lastly, my dad had a hard time keeping their culture with his family. When we kids went to school, we learned the ways of America, not our parent’s homeland. So when our father tried teaching us about his original culture and traditions, we easily forgot his culture and instead, followed the American ways that we have been taught for so long. Given these points, we can see that my dad faced the hardship of keeping his culture within his kids, always wanting them to become smarter by participating in two different cultures.

In conclusion, my father suffered from learning how America worked, searching for a job, and keeping his ethnicity within his children. But knowing that in overcoming all these difficulties, his children would benefit greatly, so he went on. Before writing this essay, I did not understand what my dad had to face in wanting a better future for me.

Now, I appreciate my dad’s culture more and respect his Taiwanese ethnicity even though I have not fully understood it yet. By understanding what my dad went through as a first generation immigrant, I appreciate whatever he provides me now.
